A classic that revolutionized American theatre, Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie," will be presented at 7:30 p.m. this Friday night by the South Rowan High School Young Order of Dramatic Actors. The play will be performed at the Mount Zion United Church of Christ at 1415 S. Main St., China Grove, across from Winn-Dixie. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for South Rowan students. "This play requires a more intimate setting," said drama teacher Sarah Drinkard, explaining the choice to stage the play at Mount Zion. "The Glass Menagerie," which began as an idea for a film script titled "The Gentleman Caller," was the catalyst for Williams' hugely successful career, which included four New York Drama Critics Circle Awards and several Pulitzer prizes. Reportedly, Williams' own unhappy family inspired the characters, including his mentally ill sister, his controlling mother and his emotionally absent father.
