Two local nonprofit agencies have received grants from the AT & amp;T Foundation, the corporate philanthropy arm of AT & amp;T Inc. Trinity Oaks Retirement Center will receive $24,370 to support an ongoing intergenerational training activity. The activity pairs computer-savvy middle school students from Salisbury Academy with retirees interested in learning computer basics, such as using the Internet, digital photography and e-mail. The grant will pay for laptop computers and software and the cost of transportation between the school on Jake Alexander Boulevard and the retirement center on Klumac Road. Partners In Learning Child Development Center will get $9,167 to support creation of an interactive Web site. The Web site will enable families with special needs children to register for classes, pay tuition online, view event calendars and lesson plans and conduct online discussions with other parents and volunteers. This year, the AT & amp;T Foundation awarded $340,000 in grants to 17 organizations in North Carolina and nearly $9 million to groups nationwide to serve diverse ethnic groups, low-income families, people with disabilities, youth or senior adults. "We are very excited about the opportunity AT & amp;T has given the residents of Trinity Oaks and are happy to be working with the staff and students of Salisbury Academy," Mike Walsh, Trinity Oaks executive director, said in a press release. "This grant will enable us to take a tremendous step forward in serving children with special needs and their families," Norma Honeycutt, Partners in Learning executive director, said in the same release.
