The skater boys came out in force Saturday at Skate Fest 2003, and many winners rolled away with trophies and honors.

"It was a great turnout. There were lots of participants and many kids watching from the sides," said Alan Lambert, director of the South Rowan YMCA which hosted skateboard competition.

Lambert estimated close to 40 people competed, coming from as far as Virginia and South Carolina.

"The largest division folks competed in was the Street Division,"he said. "And the age group with the most participants was the 13-to-16-year-old. About 19 competed."

Aside from being overwhelmed by Saturday's turnout, "I was very impressed with how Johnny handled the event," Lambert said.

Johnny Woodie, a 16-year-old South Rowan High School sophomore, organized Saturday's event.

Woodie, who works as a guard at the South Y's skate park, said previously that he had wanted a competition "all summer long." So he took it on himself to organize.

And his skateboarding brethren didn't let him down.

"Ithink Johnny was happy with the turnout, I don't think he could've done a better job," Lambert said. "He plans to have a spring event and another fall event next year."

Though a bit of a rookie at hosting skating events, Woodie is no stranger to the high-flying sport.

"Woodie is a great skater, but he's been in so many competitions, he could see how the events were run," Lambert said. "Once he got over the little details with this one, his next one should be easier."

Lambert was still amazed at how well Woodie handled everything, considering his age.

"Ithink all the people were happy,"Lambert said. "Hey, we got through the event with no complaints, and if you can do that, you can count your blessings."

Woodie was in classes and could not be reached for comment this morning.

The competition was open to people of all ages.

Participants competed in three age groups: 12 and under, 13-16, and 17 or older.

Participants could compete in the mini ramp and street course divisions.

First place winners in their divisions and categories were:

n Street division: 12 or younger, George Tolton; 13-16, Thomas Lattimore; and 17 or older, Jon Higgins.

n Mini ramp division: 12 or younger, George Tolton; 13-16, William Bullard; 17 or older, Dan Arrington.
